Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate and represent the mental experiences of university students of national identity and its objectivizing. The main question of the present study is: how is the structural order and semantic system in the mind of the students of national identity and what are its most important semantic factors? Qualitative research method, particularly, the strategy of grounded theory was employed. Open and semi-structured interviews were conducted and the data was collected form 27 PhD students of University of Isfahan during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years. The findings of the research and the categories resulting from the codification process indicate a critical idealistic model of, and, approach to the meaning of national identity in the intersubjectivity of students that construct their awareness and sense of belonging to the factors of Iran-ness and distinction and difference from other nations. The main concepts in this research included four categories, i.e. “critical self-reflection”, “factors of Iran-ness”, “membrane of idealism”, and “looking-glass self”. The self-image of students of national self is based on two categories, i.e. “critical self-reflection” and “membrane of idealism’ as central and fundamental categories of semantic system to the extent that despite several criticisms that they have of their Iranian identity and national manners, they try to represent their national self in a membrane of idealism to others.
