Abstract

The present paper is an attempt to study the effects of level of self-control on two specified crimes namely alcohol consumption and drug abuse among university students. The sample was selected from amongst the students of Tehran and Allama Tabatabi universities through simple random sampling. In the next step, 416 students were selected through random-access sampling method, who filled the questionnaires. Softwares such as SPPS and LISREL were used for the analysis of the garnered data.  The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicate that self-control scale is saturated by six factors. The theoretical model of factor structure has an acceptable fitness with the research data. The results also indicate that the degree of students’ self-control is average. The most widely drug used by boy students is cigarettes and among girl students is hookah. The t-test results indicate that there are significant differences between boys and girls regarding abuse of drug and consumption of alcohol. The abuse of drug and consumption of alcohol among boy students is more than that of girl students. Finally, the structural equation modeling showed that all of low self-control components, except expression of anger, can explain variations in drug consumption among students; therefore, self-control is an effective and explanatory factor of alcohol consumption and drug abuse among students.
