Abstract

Documentary research method is one of the main characteristics of methodology in research in humanities, particularly in macro-level sociological studies. Systematic and targeted use of documentary method requires knowledge of its epistemological backgrounds and technical aspects. Research documents and sources are a tool for understanding the meanings, objectives and incentives behind the actions of social agents and gaining information about social phenomena. The present paper is an attempt to prepare the grounds for introduction of documentary method beyond a mere technique through shedding light on the status of this method among research methods. Hence, besides explaining the different types, characteristics, applications, technical features and validity of documentary method, the way of its application, in five systematic stages, through giving an example about impacts of modernization on Iranian family changes, has been introduced as a case of study and practical guide.
