Abstract

The main objective of the present paper is to study the necessity of revival of ethical functions of higher education and university in contemporary era. Different factors affect the formation, development and actualization of ethical attributes and traits in individuals. One of these factors is suitable environmental conditions. University is one of the most effective environments for institutionalization of ethical principles and values. Attempts have been made in this paper to discuss the significance of higher education, ethics in higher education, different functions of ethics in the fields of education and research as well as ethic’s professional function in higher education. In the next step, the factors that weaken or limit ethical functions of the university are studied. Analytical-deductive method has been employed in this study. On the basis of this analysis and given that the decline or weakness of ethical function of the universities affect their orientation and cause them to focus on production of mere professional workforce instead of spiritual and ethical sublimation, it is concluded that the revival of the university’s ethical functions, which is in fact its most fundamental function, is not a choice, but a necessity.
